The decision made by the Department of Transportation means the project to construct a brand new Hudson River tunnel connecting New York and New Jersey can push ahead through design and engineering work. The DOT’s approval will ease the path to the grant-awarding by the federal government that the project must begin construction.
Senate Minority Chairman Chuck Schumer said there’s money in Biden’s $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan that could be used to fund the project. It would provide $85 billion for the modernization and replace subway cars as well as fix stations and tracks that are old. Around $25 billion of the money would go towards expanding rail and bus lines.
“So we should have all the money we need,” Schumer told reporters during an interview.
He added that New York and New Jersey will not be required to contribute their respective 25% share of the cost for the tunnel for the next few years.
“They’re working on finding an allocation,” Schumer stated, referring to New York officials.
The tunnel, which is part of the larger Gateway project to boost the capacity of rail within the New York region, dates to around 10 years ago. It was completed with environmental studies about three years back. The stakeholders, including Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, have alleged that the Trump administration delayed approval due to political reasons the Trump administration rejected.
