Tallest structure in the world: Anaconda Smelter Stack is the tallest brick structure. It was built by the Anaconda Copper Mining Company in Anaconda, Montana, USA. The brick smokestack is 169.2m (555 feet) high, with 178.38m (585ft 1.5in) of concrete foundation pedestal. It measures 26.2m (86ft) at its base. It was built as part of the Anaconda Reduction Works, also known as the Washoe Smelter.
From May 1919 to 1980, the Anaconda Smelter Stack operated until the Washoe Smelter closed permanently. It was constructed from 2,446,392 bricks. It can handle approximately 3 million cubic feet per minute of exhaust gases from the surrounding area (which uses several hundred tons of coal each day).
The designers of the stack chose to use one giant chimney for the whole Washoe Smelter complex. This complex had many furnaces, ore crushers, power stations, factories, and even its own fire department. Original plans called for a 160m (525ft) high stack, but Anaconda discovered that there were larger smokestacks in construction elsewhere.
The gases were then transported to the chimney via a network of flues and then filtered through chambers with an electrified chain. These chambers used electrostatic attraction to remove some of the most harmful particulates, principally arsenic. Previous smokestacks had no filter, which resulted in the release of approximately 20 tons of arsenic particulates daily, which caused severe illness and death to the local population.
The Washoe Smelter Complex was designated a Superfund Site in 1983 by the Environmental Protection Agency. The structures and soil below them were contaminated with extremely high levels of poisonous heavy metals over the years.
