Supermarket sweep television show: The return of the iconic television show Supermarket Swap was revealed by ABC in January of 2020. The show was scheduled to begin production in March of that year, and a premiere set for the summer of 2020. Who would have known that the plans would be halted at an abrupt stop! As soon as the COVID-19 virus swept through the country at full speed, ABC, like most other primetime networks, was forced to put filming in the back of its mind. What did the outbreak affect the reboot’s premiere? In addition to it being delayed (the show was finally launched in October of 2020), Naturally! Where and when did the filming happen? Let’s look at the details.
In the edition for 2020, the location for ‘Supermarket Sweep’ was set in the Barker Hangar – an aircraft hanger covering 35,000 square feet at Santa Monica Municipal Airport, California. Filming began in July of 2020 when the coronavirus epidemic remained in force. The premises, as well as the items in the supermarket, were disinfected using electrostatic sprayers.
The crew opted for these measures after holding several sessions of virtual meetings that let them discuss ideas during the show’s production break. Production company Fremantle utilized tips from other shows around the world on how to deal with the pandemic in order to keep up with the schedule of filming.
Dan Funk, Fremantle’s Executive Vice President of Unscripted Production, said: “It was an amount of planning and continually making changes. As new information became available and we adjusted things so that when the production began, we knew what the plan of the protocol was about and the best way to proceed and make sure everyone is in the safest possible environment.”
The host Leslie Jones was not able to practice her acting on stage. She was required to refine her hosting skills with Zoom weekly run-throughs between March 2020 and July 2020 until she could move to LA. After filming began, the project was completed within two weeks. The set was equipped with regular tests, hand-sanitizing stations protection equipment, and a limited amount of contact — according to the guidelines set by Hollywood’s unions, local and state bodies. The crew employed was small, and the crew members were divided into different modules – to limit contact as much as it was possible.
