Sesquicentennial state park photos: The Kal-Haven Trail offers travelers the opportunity to rest and recharge in more than half a dozen old railroad towns located between Kalamazoo, South Haven, and Kalamazoo. These towns are connected by the 34-mile crushed limestone rail trail that runs from the outskirts to the resort town of Lake Michigan.
The trail follows the rail bed that was laid in 1870 by the Kalamazoo & South Haven Railroad. It was almost immediately bought by the Michigan Central Railroad. In 1950, the New York Central Railroad purchased the line and operated trains there until the merger with Penn Central in 1968. The line was eventually abandoned in 1970.
The trail was opened in 1991 and is considered one of the oldest in Michigan. The trailhead is served by an old red caboose and two depots in Bloomingdale, South Haven. Most of the route is made up of limestone and crushed slag, and it slopes down to the lake. However, road bikes can be accommodated in some sections.
You’ll start at the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail western endpoint. After passing through 7 miles of shade, you will reach the open fields of Mentha. The Mentha Plantation is almost gone, which was responsible for the area’s reputation as the best peppermint oil producer in the early 20th-century.
